Wii Sports World’s Best Selling Video Game?

Posted on: Wednesday, 7 January 2009, 07:20 CST

Wii Sports now carries the unofficial title of world’s best selling video game.

The game, which is an amalgamation of straightforward sports games and comes with every Wii sold, was given the title of top selling video game ever by VG Chartz, a not-so-trusted “sales-tracking” website.

Although the data is in question, one thing that is not is the fact that Wii sold over 2 million units in the U.S. during the month of November, pushing worldwide sales over the 40 million mark.

Super Mario Bros., which came with the original Nintendo Entertainment System, previously held the title.

Some question whether bundled games should be counted if analysts are seeking to find consumer preference.

Many games come bundled with the Xbox 360 Arcade, including Feeding Frenzy, Luxor 2, Boom Boom Rocket, Pac-Man Championship Edition, and Uno.  Games like Tetris often come on mobile phones, and Windows Solitaire comes on every PC that includes the Windows operating system.  Gamers are questioning whether these games have been counted also.

According to VG Chartz, in Japan (where Wii Sports is sold separately) there is a 45% attach rate.  Many aren’t convinced that 45% of U.S. gamers would also purchase Wii Sports if the game was sold separately in the states.

Play habits tracked through the online Nintendo Channel show that a games success in one country doesn’t guarantee success in another.

According to VG Chartz website, “The bundling of Wii Sports with the Wii console is integral to the success of the Wii console - Wii Sports adds value to the package and isn't given away with the console. It is purchased alongside the console.”

VG Chartz believes it would be unfair not to include bundled games into the best-selling game statistics.

The website’s top ten selling games of all time list included in this order:

  • Wii Sports (Wii)
  • Super Mario Brothers (NES)
  • Pokemon Red/Green/Blue (GameBoy)
  • Tetris (GameBoy)
  • Duck Hunt (NES)
  • Pokemon Gold/Silver (GameBoy)
  • Nintendogs (DS)
  • Super Mario World (Super NES)
  • Wii Play (Wii)
  • Super Mario Land (GameBoy)

All of the games on the list were for a Nintendo system, and had been bundled at one point with a Nintendo game console.
