Tabula Digita Introduces New DimensionM Multiplayer 2.0, Educational Video Games for Grades 3-12

Posted on: Wednesday, 21 January 2009, 13:09 CST

New Release Covers 200 Math Skills Ranging from Elementary to High School; Enhanced Reporting Features and Improved Educator Portal

NEW YORK, Jan. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Students who love learning through the use of video games will score big this year as Tabula Digita, the leading developer of educational video games, today announced DimensionM(TM) Multiplayer 2.0 at the 2009 Florida Educational Technology Conference (FETC).

Set to be released this quarter, the new DimensionM Multiplayer 2.0 features vastly expanded curriculum content with more than 200 math skills presented via immersive, action-packed simulations for students in grades 3-12. According to a study conducted by the University of Central Florida last year, immersive educational video games can improve students' mathematics understanding and skills, and significantly raise scores on district-wide math benchmark exams.

Like its predecessor, the new Multiplayer 2.0 offers three distinct missions. In each game, students face numerous mathematical obstacles that require knowledge of content and swift reaction to successfully navigate through a series of mazes to score the most points. As they compete, each student builds upon basic skills like multiplication, division, and fractions, which in later years will lead to mastery of everything from proportions, number lines, and adding and subtracting integers, to order of operations, evaluating expressions, employing function tables, and solving complex equations.

"In the past, when students were taught math, they were taught from a different textbook with little continuity from one grade to the next," Ntiedo Etuk, chief executive officer of Tabula Digita. "With this expansion of DimensionM students will play and learn from the same educational platform with grade-specific content from elementary through high school. The instructions, the activities, even the shortcuts can be applied from early multiplication skills to Algebra II content. We believe this will provide a profound connection from year to year, leading to greater comprehension and quicker mastery of important math skills."

A female student from Ocoee, Florida stated that she used to think math was "just ok" until she started playing DimensionM. "Now I can't wait to get to my math class to play. I get to create my own avatar and goop or freeze out my competitors so I can advance to the next level. And, the best part is if I get stuck because I don't understand something, I can ask one of my friends or even another player online to help me advance."

The new Multiplayer 2.0 gives students the ability to create their own avatar. It will include "in game" reports that reflect a summary along with information about students' performance and mastery of concepts. Students' and teachers' access to the various reports, will allow for better communication, collaboration and goal setting.

A Broward County educator commented that games have long been recognized by teachers as a way to engage students and make learning more fun. She added that what's particularly compelling about DimensionM are the benefits it offers both teachers and students. "Teachers will receive an instant assessment of what students understand and what skills they need additional time to comprehend. For students, because the games keep things pleasantly challenging, they'll attempt to solve problems they're not good at yet, get instant feedback on their effort, and immediately try again until they get it right. This ability to explore right away makes these supplemental games more engaging than just textbooks or lectures alone," she said.

The new video game series is available on both Windows and Macintosh platforms, with all lessons or missions correlated to National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and a variety of state standards. There are several purchase options available for schools and districts to consider when purchasing the new DimensionM games.
