Network Strategy Partners Studies Analyze the TCO Benefits of Traffic Engineering and Traffic Management in Carrier Ethernet Networks

Posted on: Thursday, 29 January 2009, 11:00 CST

OAKLAND, Calif., Jan. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Two new studies by Network Strategy Partners (NSP) analyze the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) benefits of traffic engineering and traffic management in Carrier Ethernet networks as compared to first generation Carrier Ethernet networks. One study addresses retail networks while the other addresses wholesale networks.

According to the studies (An Analysis of the Financial Benefits of Traffic Engineering and Traffic Management in (Wholesale) Carrier Ethernet Networks), TCO is reduced compared to first generation Carrier Ethernet networks through traffic engineering, resource management, and traffic management solutions provided by Gridpoint Systems.

"First generation Carrier Ethernet networks are fairly simple and easy to deploy but they have significant scalability and manageability problems," said Peter Fetterolf, partner of Network Strategy Partners. "Gridpoint's solution resolves these problems by applying traffic engineering of Ethernet service classes with traffic management at the ingress to the network to deliver an engineered Carrier Ethernet network."

Study Highlights

The studies model the benefits derived in a metro aggregation network that offers:

  • Retail Triple Play services to residential households and Carrier Ethernet services to enterprises;

  • Wholesale Carrier Ethernet services that could be used for backhaul by mobile wireless or wireline operators.

The analysis shows that the traffic engineering and traffic management solutions reduce TCO over a five-year study period as compared to first generation networks. Specifically,

  • TCO is 38% lower for the retail business model

  • TCO is 31% lower for the wholesale business model
