SAN FRANCISCO, SunNetwork 2003 Conference and Pavilion, Sept. 16

/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced Java(TM) Studio Enterprise, a comprehensive, cost-effective, unified development system that integrates development tools, services and support for building and testing world-class applications for the Java Enterprise System.

"Java Enterprise System and Java Studio Enterprise signal a new era for application platforms and developer tools," said Rich Green, senior vice president, Software Developer Platforms Group at Sun. "This integrated development system can reduce cost and complexity, and accelerate the development of secure network services spanning enterprise servers, desktops and mobile clients. The powerful combination of the Java Enterprise System and Java Studio Enterprise delivers on Sun's commitment to offer our customers serious software made simple."

Following the pricing model of the Java Enterprise System, the Java Studio Enterprise offering is priced at $5 per employee when ordered as a companion to the Java Enterprise System or $1,895 USD if purchased separately. Targeted at Java Enterprise System developers, Java Studio Enterprise includes full access and support from the Sun Developer Network and associated developer resources from Sun.

Dana Gardner, senior analyst, Application Infrastructure and Software Platforms at Yankee Group said, "Enterprises want to radically simplify the software lifecycle, from evaluation to procurement, and from deployment and optimization through to maintenance. By taking a holistic approach to development and deployment, and through an innovative pricing paradigm, Java Studio Enterprise forms an important step toward simplification. It should offer enterprises an economical and swift way to assemble and distribute a portfolio of scalable enterprise software services."

Java Studio Enterprise integrates all the tools, development versions of the enterprise servers, rich documentation, samples and blueprints to enhance the developer experience, including additional support with a Premium membership in the Sun Developer Network. The development system combines all the tools necessary to build modern, Web-based enterprise applications, including a fast, full-feature Java IDE, Java(TM) 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE(TM)) tools and wizards, Web service creation and assembly tools, portal channel builder, integration connector builder, and one-button deploy tools for application and Web servers. Java Studio Enterprise also includes a set of development servers that allows for simplified testing against the Java Enterprise System including the latest versions of Sun's application server, Web server, integration server and portal server.

Java Studio Enterprise also offers a comprehensive list of developer services including access to email support, moderated forums, and diverse technical content that aids the developer in building large-scale applications through close developer-to-developer interactions. More information can be found at http://www.java.sun.com/.

The Java Enterprise System is a core set of open network services that are the foundation for world-class business applications. With the Java Enterprise System, Sun converges its software offerings into a predictable, scheduled quarterly release of an integrated software system distributed on the Solaris(TM) Operating System, Solaris for x86 and Linux. Java Studio Enterprise complements the Java Enterprise System by providing the sophisticated tools and resources that offer the developer an integrated systems approach with the complexity engineered out.

Pricing and Availability

The Java Enterprise System is available for $100 USD per employee. The Java Studio Enterprise pricing model is based on a low-cost per employee incremental price to align with the Java Enterprise System. The incremental subscription price of $5 USD per employee per year includes software, developer support and services. Developers can also purchase Java Studio Enterprise separately for $1,895 USD. Java Studio Enterprise is slated for general availability for Solaris OS, Solaris x86, Linux and Windows 2000 Professional and XP Professional in the first quarter of 2004. Product updates will align with Java Enterprise System releases at regular, periodic intervals.
