White House Embraces New Technology

The White House made another transition into a New Media world on Tuesday, "live-blogging" President Barack Obama’s speech, according to a recent AFP report.
The White House website posted a real-time video of Obama's town hall speech in Fort Myers, Florida, allowing additional blogger comments along with the president's speech and audience inquiries.
Some of the blogger responses are available at White House live blog: http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog_post/LiveblogFtMyersFLtownhall/.
Here are a few samples of the speech and the blogger comments:
"We'll put people back to work doing the work that needs to be done,” said President Obama. “That's what the recovery plan comes down to, really,” noted a blogger.
A blogger noted Obama’s “moment of candor”: "No plan is perfect. I can't tell you with one hundred percent certainty that everything in this plan will work exactly as we hope," the President said. But, that said, "doing nothing is not an option -- you didn't send me to Washington to do nothing."
This "live-blog" by the White House was released a day after Obama attended his first press conference and allowed a website reporter, Sam Stein of The Huffington Post, to ask him a question.
Obama also invited a question from 88-year-old correspondent Helen Thomas, who has been a reporter on the White House since John F. Kennedy was president in the early 1960’s.
"All right, Helen. This is my inaugural moment here. I'm really excited," Obama said. Stein inquired if Obama would back an examination of "misdeeds" conducted by Bush administration officials.
Thomas also asked if any Middle Eastern countries possessed nuclear weapons and wondered if Pakistan is giving a safe haven in Afghanistan to "so-called terrorists."
