Error Occurs in Locating Damaged Fiber Cable in Cuero, Texas

Posted on: Tuesday, 5 July 2005, 15:00 CDT

Jul. 1--CUERO -- Texas One Call was used to locate a fiber cable along U.S. Highway 87, but the location provided to the property owner who requested it was wrong, Margerie Shellenbarger said Thursday.

Shellenbarger said work crews sent to repair the cable, including SBC employees, have acknowledged that the fence being installed on her property was several feet away from the markings provided by the telephone company's contractor.

However, a spokesperson for SBC, Natalie Carlson, said "Obviously this has to be investigated, and we won't be able to comment on it until the investigation is complete." Carlson said previously that One Call had not been used to locate SBC's fiber cable, which was damaged by a posthole digger about 5 p.m. Tuesday, resulting in phone and Internet service outages throughout DeWitt and Lavaca counties until about 10:30 p.m. She also said emergency 911 phone service in the region was re-routed, although area residents and police agencies in both DeWitt and Lavaca County said the service was not operational during the outage.

Shellenbarger verified Thursday that she notified Texas One Call on June 13 for work that was scheduled to begin June 16. She requested location of utilities along U.S. 87 in an area across from its intersection with Zengerle Road.

Shellenbarger said she was upset the Victoria Advocate had been told otherwise by SBC.

She said she has requested utility locations in the past and always avoided any problems. In this case, the line was marked wrong, she said.

"It was quite a bit off. It was not our fault, and they let us know it wasn't," she said.
