VASCO Data Security Unveils DIGIPASS 835a at CeBIT

OAKBROOK TERRACE, Ill. and ZURICH, Switzerland, March 2 /PRNewswire-
FirstCall/ — VASCO Data Security International, Inc. (Nasdaq: VDSI)
(www.vasco.com), a leading software security company specialising in
authentication products, unveils DIGIPASS(R) 835a at CeBIT. DIGIPASS 835a is
an upgrade version of DIGIPASS(R) 835 which was launched last year. DIGIPASS
835a has an enhanced display, allowing alpha-numeric digits and Asian
character sets. Its optical interface facilitates data transfer from the
computer screen onto the reader thus making the card reader extremely
intuitive and user-friendly. Sm@rt-TAN plus readers with an optical interface,
such as DIGIPASS 835a, are increasingly used in Germany. The new model is
compliant with current German HHD standard and available for cooperative banks
through DG Verlag.

DG VERLAG (www.dgverlag.de) is the strategy, solution, service partner and
card competence center for German cooperative banks such as ‘Volks- &
Raiffeisenbanken’. Cooperative banks in Germany, Volks- and Raffeisen Banks
have a leading role in the development of the security aspects of online
banking applications. Part of that is the innovative Sm@rt-TAN plus
development, which thanks to the optic reader has facilitated the ease-of-use.
DIGIPASS 835a, which also focuses on intuitive use, is part of DG Verlag’s
offering to cooperative banks.

The optical interface enables the automatic download of encrypted data
from the PC onto the display of the DIGIPASS. Data transfer only takes a
couple of seconds; it requires no software or driver installation. The data
are simply transferred by holding the optical interface in front of the
computer screen: the flashing pattern on the PC screen and the photo-
transistors of the DIGIPASS 835a take care of the transfer. The optical
technology of the DIGIPASS 835a can be used in conjunction with several screen
types, including CRT, TFT, LCD, LED and plasma. It uses 5 photo transistors
and has data transmission speeds of 20 fps. The rubber triangles tilting the
card reader in the right angle to improve the reading of the data on the
reader display are compliant with German Sm@rt TAN optical reader
specifications.

The enhanced fully graphical display (80 x 16 dot matrix) supports alpha-
numeric digits. Thanks to this alpha-numeric display data input such as IBAN
codes can easily be displayed for authentication.

DIGIPASS 835a is easy to deploy for banks, since it does not require the
installation of additional software on the customer’s PC. DIGIPASS 835a is
personalized and activated on insertion of the end user’s bank card. The
optical reader is extremely simple to use resulting in a higher user
acceptance of e-signature, the appropriate countermeasure against man-in-the-
middle, man-in-the-browser and man-in-the-PC attacks.

DIGIPASS 835a is EMV-PLA compliant, which makes it suitable for the use of
e-banking solutions in countries which use PIN-less payment cards.

“Solutions such as DIGIPASS 835a provide no longer any excuse to banks and
customers to adopt e-signature as the only adequate counter measure against
man-in-the-middle attacks. User friendliness is core in DIGIPASS 835a. The
optical interface, though slightly more expensive than other EMV-CAP readers,
largely contributes to the intuitive use,” says Jan Valcke, President and COO
at VASCO Data Security.
