New Edge Networks Adds New Options for Increasing Network Performance While Lowering Costs

Posted on: Monday, 2 March 2009, 06:00 CST

LAS VEGAS, March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- New Edge Networks, the business communications unit of EarthLink Inc., (Nasdaq: ELNK), today announced two new access options that integrate into New Edge's award-winning nationwide MPLS and Class of Service network backbone. New Edge Networks launched both private Ethernet and public IP Security (IPsec) today at the Channel Partners show in Las Vegas, further expanding its managed solutions capabilities.

In addition to DSL, T1, DS3 and wireless, customers can now access the New Edge nationwide MPLS private network via an Ethernet connection and over the public Internet with IPsec. Ethernet is an attractive alternative for a host or corporate headquarters location with large bandwidth requirements, while IPsec is ideal for remote locations to securely access a corporate network.

"New Edge is a leader in providing a wide array of network access options. Today customers can select MPLS (multi-protocol layer switching) where DSL, T1, Ethernet, or EVDO are available at the right price and then use IPsec for locations to blend public and private access solutions. By doing so, customers receive a single, secure network environment at a very cost effective price point," said Greg Griffiths, vice president of marketing for New Edge. "In today's economy, New Edge is providing businesses with the flexibility to deploy their networks to get more bandwidth for the buck."

New Edge's new Ethernet offering is an ideal last mile technology for larger enterprises with high bandwidth needs, and is extremely cost effective compared to legacy DS3 or OC3 transport costs. With New Edge Class of Service over Ethernet, customers can securely access their private MPLS network with speeds from 10Mbps up to 10 Gbps.

Added Griffiths, "Our customers have the advantage of choosing the network configuration that best fits their needs, and New Edge does all the heavy lifting by providing a fully managed solution. In addition, the New Edge MPLS private network solution makes changing access types easy, enabling customers to quickly respond to shifting business needs."

New Edge's IPsec provides a transparent extension of a customer's private MPLS based network, whereby remote locations can access the core MPLS network securely over any public Internet connection. With IPsec, data is encrypted and authenticated for secure connectivity over any Internet connection, creating a secure transmission tunnel between the Customer Premises Equipment and the network router. New Edge Networks manages the network-side access element, which simplifies private network connectivity management and makes it more cost effective for customers.

"With IPsec, any office or remote location can securely connect into a fully meshed MPLS network. Customers can 'bring their own access' with coverage virtually anywhere there is Internet access," added Griffiths. "We also recommend IPsec as a cost effective and reliable network back-up solution."
