Tablet PC to speak more languages
Posted on: Monday, 15 September 2003, 06:00 CDT
After releasing its beta in March, Microsoft Corp. today announced tablet PCs with new multilingual software.
The software companys original equipment manufacturing and reselling partners will preinstall and sell the Microsoft Tablet PC Multilingual User Interface and Recognizer Pack to customers who want to switch between languages when running applications.
The preinstalled software stretches language support for user settings, including the menus, help files and dialog boxes, for the Microsoft XP Tablet PC Edition operating system. The languages the OS supports are Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, Spanish, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese and Swedish.
Microsoft is also launching a separate kit for customers looking for more voice and handwriting language support. The Tablet PC Recognizer Pack will convert French, German, Iberian Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese handwriting, but only Japanese, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese speech into computer text.
Both include an update to the soft keyboard in the Tablet Input Panel so users can then select the different Windows input languages. Price varies depending on the number of licenses purchased.
