SAN FRANCISCO, SunNetwork 2003 Conference and Pavilion, Sept. 16

/PRNewswire/ -- Tadpole Computer, Inc. today will showcase Sun's Java (TM) Desktop System running on Tadpole's latest SPARCLE notebooks at the SunNetwork(SM) 2003 Conference and Pavilion. The demonstration runs in conjunction with the launch of Tadpole's new marketing campaign, "You run Solaris (TM) and Linux. So why does your notebook run Windows?"

With Tadpole notebooks running the Sun Java Desktop System, developers can benefit from the ease of management and the added security the Java Desktop System brings, as well as interoperability with Windows-based applications and the ability to run UNIX(R) tools and applications on platforms of choice, such as Linux or Solaris.

The SPARCLE notebook family with the Sun Java Desktop System is a complementary addition to Tadpole's current family of UNIX platform-based notebooks. Tadpole has always been a leading innovator, incorporating Sun technology into their notebook solutions including their latest SPARCLE notebook, which is offered at a lower entry-level price point for technical users that need mobility but could not previously afford Tadpole's mid- and high-end solutions.

The rock-solid reliability, security and performance of the UNIX platform are now dramatically enhanced with the Sun Java Desktop System, a comprehensive, secure, highly affordable enterprise desktop solution that is simple to use and works with existing infrastructure. The Sun Java Desktop System provides users with all of the critical software and tools needed coupled with interoperability with Windows file formats, networks, and messaging applications. UNIX platform developers and engineers no longer need to compromise on their development environment. Engineering organizations can now consolidate two or more machines onto a single computer with all the productivity benefits a notebook provides over a desktop. Previously, developers compromised or required several different computers to run their tools to result in quality productivity tools.

"As one of Sun's oldest OEM customers, we are leading the way by being one of the first vendors to fully embrace the Sun Java Desktop System strategy," said Mark Johnston, CEO of Tadpole Computer. "We are very pleased to be working with Sun to provide viable productivity alternatives for the large numbers of software developers and engineers who need a reliable UNIX environment and world class productivity applications. Incorporating the Sun Java Desktop System with our SPARCLE notebooks is the first of many exciting new plans we have that revolve around Sun's new desktop."

"The Sun Java Desktop System is breaking new ground by providing the market with one of the most complete, secure and economical alternative desktops on the market," said Peder Ulander, Director of Marketing of Sun Microsystems. "Were are excited to be working with Tadpole on integtrating the Sun Java Desktop System as a standard offering on their SPARCLE family of notebooks. With Sun's software and Tadpole's hardware, customers will quickly be able to realize the benefits moving to an open-standards based desktop environment that provides the with all of the functionality they need at a fraction of the cost of a traditional Windows system."

Demonstrations can be seen today at Tadpole's booth, IP-0168, at the SunNetwork Conference. The company plans to ship notebooks with the Sun Java Desktop System simultaneously with general availability of the final software from Sun.
