Small Act Network Expands Charitable Giving Through Social Media

Posted on: Monday, 2 March 2009, 14:29 CST

MCLEAN, Va., March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Casey Golden, CEO and Founder of the Small Act Network, will speak to the US Treasury on March 10 about the importance of social media in charitable giving, particularly during tough economic times. Casey will be joined by Edie Fraser, Julie Kantor, and other non-profit experts featured in the recently published Business Week best-selling book, Do Your Giving While You Are Living. The goal of the event will be to emphasize the importance of supporting charitable institutions in this financial crisis, and to prove that it is possible to support nonprofits through extensive online community organizing.

"The rise of social media has led to a new culture of philanthropy, where small acts of volunteerism and relatively low amounts of money can make a large difference to the nonprofit community," commented Golden. "Non-profits, fundraising professionals, and charity-minded individuals must change the way they approach their industry and fundraising as a whole." Casey's chapter, "Technology with a Heart", details these resources as a guide for both donors and nonprofit organizations.

Casey Golden recently founded the Small Act Network and is the former President and Cofounder of Parature, the global leader in on-demand customer service software, and uses the same basic principles (that organizations and consumers need to forge a mutually beneficial and close relationship) to prove that despite economic conditions, it is possible for non-profits to rely on donors for their funding.

In a recent interview with Larry King, former President Bill Clinton echoed the importance of social media as a resource for extended donor relations. "The world is taking us all in this direction," President Clinton noted. "I think it's important that when [we conclude our online campaign], my foundation will have a broader base of donors and a smaller average amount."

Small Act Network has just launched a Facebook application designed to encourage users to perform "small acts", like filling out surveys, that will cause partnered corporations to donate small amounts of money in their name to a charity of their choice. Small Act Network has also forged a new client partnership with the Office Depot Foundation, the giving arm of Office Depot, Inc., which supports programs that enhance quality of life for children, strengthen communities, encourage local and global economic growth, empower schools and (non-profit) organizations.
