New Cell Phone Battery Charges in Only 10 Seconds

Posted on: Friday, 13 March 2009, 08:45 CDT

A cell phone battery that charges in only 10 seconds is the newest invention that truly makes this the technological age.

This revolutionary gadget charges 100 times faster than a normal battery and might become available for use in phones, laptops, iPods and digital cameras within a few years.

The battery was created by engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The team says that this invention utilizes basic materials already on the market and is easy to mass produced.

This technology may allow an electric car charge fully in the amount of time that it takes to put gas in the car. This takes away a huge road block in finding greener and cleaner technology.

The new technology is founded upon regular lithium ion rechargeable batteries in the majority of cameras, phones and portable computers
. Lithium ion batteries hold huge amounts of energy in small containers.

On the other hand, these batteries are also slow at recharging, a pain for those who forget to plug their phones into their chargers at night.

Dr Gerbrand Cedar, who created the new battery, stated to The Daily Mail that: 'Electric car batteries have a lot of energy so you can drive at 55mph for a long time, but the power is low. You can't accelerate quickly.'

The researchers altered a regular electrode created from lithium iron phosphate and changed the foundation so that ions powered up 100 times faster.

Unlike other batteries, the material does not disintegrate over the weeks or months of use.

'The ability to charge and discharge batteries in a matter of seconds rather than hours may open up new technological applications and induce lifestyle changes,' Ceder noted.

The amazing green technology could lead the way for more compact, lighter batteries that might be the size a credit card.

The invention may also lead the way in a new kind of electric car.

Larger batteries for electric cars could be at full power in only five minutes, a big difference from the current eight hours.
