A new technology company spun out of Aston University has been sold for an undisclosed sum.
Optical fibre sensing company Insensys has acquired Indigo Photonics, based on Aston Science Park.
Insensys, of Fareham in Hampshire, supplies fibre optic sensors which measure strain and temperature on bridges, tunnels, dams, oil and gas platforms, aircraft and ships to help detect material fatigue and ensure safe operation.
Its acquisition of Indigo Photonics secures Insensys' access to new technology.
Richard Cliff, corporate partner at Black Country law firm George Green, advised Insensys on the deal.
Insensys has already collaborated with Indigo Photonics to produce a fibre sensor interrogator, which allows fibre optic technology to be used more cheaply and in more hostile environments.
Indigo Photonics was established in 2001, with the backing of venture capitalist 3i, to commercialise the intellectual property from the world renowned Photonics Research Group at Aston University. 3i remains involved in Indigo as it becomes a shareholder in Insensys, as part of the deal.
According to Martin Jones, chief executive of Insensys, the combination of Indigo's technical strength and Insensys' market knowledge and customer service will help secure the future of the company. 'The resultant blend of structural expertise and instrumentation expertise will enables Insensys to deliver superior solutions to our customers,' he said.
