US navy ship due in Kenyan coastal waters
NAIROBI, July 5 (Xinhua) -- The USS Gonzalez of the United State's navy, is expected to dock at the Mombasa port of Kenya this week as part of efforts to boost "maritime security" in the east Africa region, the US embassy in Nairobi said Tuesday.
The Gonzalez, a guided-missile destroyer, is currently in the region as part of Task Force 150 and is involved in "maritime security" operations in the region, the US embassy said in a statement here.
Gonzalez's visit marks the first time a US navy ship has moored there since 1999. The visit will allow for military to military training for the US navy and Kenyan counterparts, the embassy said.
Maritime security operations are designed to complement the counter-terrorism and security efforts of the nations in the region in order to deny international terrorists use of the maritime environment as a venue for attack or to transport personnel, weapons, or other material.
The ship is part of the US Fifth Fleet, based in Manama, Bahrain. Future port visits by other US navy vessels are under consideration.
