Toshiba, Sharp Discuss Joint Effort To Generate Solar Power

Posted on: Friday, 27 March 2009, 11:15 CDT

Japanese companies Toshiba and Sharp, leaders in consumer electronics, are in discussion about a possible tie-up in the solar power generation field, the companies publicized Friday, the Associated Free Press accounted.

Sharp Corp. spokeswoman Miyuki Nakayama, informed, “It is true that we are holding talks on the solar cell business with other companies, including Toshiba,” declining to elaborate further.

Sharp hopes to boost its solar business exponentially, with projected solar cell revenue to attain 1.7 billion dollars worldwide for this year to March 31.  This is a 12 percent increase from last year, Nakayama said.

Toshiba just recently launched its full admission into solar power in January, but indicates the company is still in search of solar or photovoltaic cell panels that exchange sunlight into electricity.

Spokeswoman, Hiroko Mochida, for Toshiba said, “We are mulling where to procure panels as we do not make them... Sharp is one of the companies under our consideration,” further affirming that a definite decision had yet been reached.

Toshiba’s strengths lie in the area of building systems that distribute generated power, however they hope to hone in on the business of photovoltaic systems to earn an estimated annual sales of 2 billion dollars by 2016.

A Friday article in the mass-circulation, Asahi Shimbun, reported that Sharp would offer panels to Toshiba, in exchange for supply distribution systems to Sharp.

A government imposed economic stimulus package anticipated to be drafted in April, according to daily circulation, Sankei Shimbun, would comprise of over 20 billion dollars in spending to install solar panels on public buildings.
