Broadcom's NetXtreme II(R) Gigabit Ethernet Controllers Featuring Accelerated iSCSI Host Bus Adapter Functionality Now Integrated With New HP ProLiant G6 Servers

The Broadcom(R) BCM5709C Converges Ethernet with iSCSI Block Storage to Provide New HP Servers with Improved Performance and Reduced Ownership Cost
Since iSCSI is easier to implement and manage than Fibre Channel, IT professionals can use their existing Ethernet infrastructure to deploy iSCSI storage solutions without having to invest in iSCSI host bus adapter (HBA) cards or re-train personnel. And by utilizing iSCSI boot functionality, IT professionals can boot servers from the network itself rather than using local storage. This allows for easier operating system (OS) file and image management across multiple servers and results in a lower cost of ownership with a higher level of service.
"Broadcom continues to drive the adoption of new standard features, such as iSCSI HBA functionality, that improve server performance and total cost of ownership," said
Per today's announcement by HP, the Broadcom NetXtreme(R) II BCM5709C GbE controller with standard Ethernet functionality and accelerated iSCSI storage capabilities is featured on new HP ProLiant server models including the DL360 G6 and DL380 G6 as well as the ProLiant DL385 G5p that is currently shipping.
Prior to the BCM5709C GbE controller solution, HP iSCSI was only available from Broadcom via optional HP network interface cards (NICs) or through an HP software license that activates the iSCSI functionality. As a result, non-Broadcom customers requiring iSCSI functionality had to acquire third-party HBA cards. With the BCM5709C, new HP ProLiant server models will have iSCSI HBA functionality activated and ready for use.
"Customers want networking solutions that offer them the ability to grow their business while reducing operating costs," said
