Niobrara County School District #1 Announces Opening of the Wyoming Virtual Academy

Posted on: Wednesday, 1 April 2009, 12:55 CDT

Wyoming's first online public school program serving students in kindergarten through high school is now available to students across the state

LUSK, Wyo., April 1 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Niobrara County School District #1 is pleased to announce the opening of the Wyoming Virtual Academy (WYVA), the state's first online public school serving students in kindergarten through high school. WYVA is now accepting applications and will start classes in the Fall of 2009. The program is open to families across the state.

WYVA was recently approved by the Wyoming Department of Education through the Wyoming Switchboard Network, which acts as the central collection of distance education resources available to Wyoming students, parents, instructors, school districts and distance education program providers.

WYVA will use the curriculum, materials and school services provided by K12 Inc., the leading provider of K-12 online school programs in the U.S. The K12 virtual school program is offered in 21 states, including neighboring states Colorado, Idaho and Utah.

"Superintendent Jim McBride, the Wyoming Department of Education and state lawmakers did a tremendous job over the past two years creating a framework for districts to offer high quality and accountable online education programs to Wyoming students," said Rick Luchsinger, Superintendent of Niobrara County School District. "Our district looks forward to working with the Department and school districts across the state to ensure that the Wyoming Virtual Academy is a successful public education program that meets the needs of students and families."

Online learning is one of the fastest growing segments in public education. According to the International Association of K-12 Online Learning (iNACOL), over one million students are enrolled in online learning. Online public schools provide individualized learning programs that allow students flexibility to learn at their own pace with instruction from teachers.

WYVA students will learn outside the classroom and receive instruction, support and oversight from state-licensed teachers. Younger students will work alongside a learning coach -- a parent or responsible adult -- who will provide guidance and assistance. Students will be required to meet accountability standards, including academic and attendance requirements, and must participate in state assessments in a proctored setting.

WYVA teachers will assign lessons, provide instruction and regularly interact with students and parents via email, web-based classrooms, online discussions, phone and face-to-face meetings. Teachers will also organize a variety of school outings for students and families.

Students enrolled in WYVA will receive an individualized learning program using K12 courses in math, English/language arts, science, history, art, music, physical education and world language electives, along with a complete menu of high school courses, including AP(R) and honors-level courses. Students will access their web-based lessons through the K12 Online School (OLS) and also use other off-line education materials (textbooks, workbooks, math and science supplies, hands-on projects and much more). All of the materials, including a computer system on loan from the school, will be shipped directly to each family's home. Because WYVA is a public school, it is tuition-free and open to all students who reside within Wyoming.

WYVA will be led by Dr. Ed Weber, a veteran educator with more than 30 years experience as a teacher and administrator in Wyoming public schools. Dr. Weber, who earned a doctorate in Education Administration at University of Wyoming, previously served as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction for Campbell County School District #1.

In the weeks and months ahead, WYVA will host a series of information sessions and other free events across the state for families interested in learning more about the school program. A list of all the upcoming events, along with information on how to enroll in WYVA, can be found at www.K12.com/wyva.
