Raleigh, N.C., Radio Station Adds Second High-Definition Signal

Posted on: Thursday, 7 July 2005, 12:00 CDT

Jul. 7--Podcasting isn't the only new technology that Mix 101.5 is embracing. Last week the station, also known as WRAL-FM, became the first commercial radio station in the state, and the second in the nation, to broadcast more than one high-definition radio signal.

The station began broadcasting its first digital radio signal in December 2002, offering the same programming as Mix 101.5 but with the added allure of CD-quality sound for those with high-definition radios. (At first it was more of a technical experiment than anything else, since HD radios didn't hit the market until last year.)

Now, in addition to that signal, called WRAL-HD1, station owner Capitol Broadcasting has unleashed a second, separate signal, WRAL-HD2, with different programming. The new signal, available only on high-definition radios capable of receiving multicasts, will feature brand-new rock and pop music from Jack Johnson, Lenny Kravitz, Dave Matthews and others.

The station has obtained an experimental license from the Federal Communications Commission to broadcast WRAL-HD2, which in essence is a new radio station.

WRAL-HD2 won't have any commercials to begin with -- other than promotional spots for Capitol Broadcasting's other ventures, such as WRAL-TV5 and the Durham Bulls, said Ardie Gregory, Mix 101.5's vice president and general manager. Commercials are likely to appear eventually, however.

WRAL-HD2 also can be heard on the station's Web site, wralfm.com. Just click on "Listen Live" and select WRAL-HD2.

Raleigh-based Capitol Broadcasting is renowned for being a technology pioneer. WRAL-TV5 was the nation's first commercial station to broadcast a high-definition television signal.
