MURRAY HILL, N.J., July 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Lucent Technologies today announced that 56 students have been selected to receive the Lucent Global Science Scholars award for their excellence in science and math. Sponsored by the Lucent Technologies Foundation, the Global Science Scholars program supports exceptional students who are pursuing careers in information and communications technologies.
The culmination of the program is the weeklong Global Science Scholars Summit, which will take place July 22-28 at Lucent Technologies' headquarters in Murray Hill, N.J. During the week, students will shadow Bell Labs researchers, tour laboratories, participate in panel discussions, interact with Bell Labs scientists and researchers, and work collaboratively with other scholars on a multinational team project.
This year's students come from 16 countries and regions -- Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Korea, Mexico, Netherlands, Philippines, Poland, Russia, Spain and the United Kingdom -- as well as 17 U.S. states. This is the first year since the program's inception in 1999 that students from the Philippines have participated.
"We hope this program encourages these very bright students to become the next generation of inventors, researchers, scientists and maybe even Nobel Prize winners," said Chris Park, president of the Lucent Foundation. "It is an exciting and rewarding program, and we have extremely high hopes for this year's scholars."
Applications were received from students in 16 participating countries and regions and 44 U.S. states. Scholars were selected by independent panels of judges based on their potential for future contribution to the fields of information and telecommunications technology, interest in developing a global perspective, community leadership and overall academic achievement. That includes their grade point average; enrollment in honors, advanced placement and college courses; and research work.
Scholars receive an expense-paid trip to the Summit, as well as a $5,000 award. In the year following their selection, recipients are offered a paid internship at a Lucent location in their home country, where possible.
