New Service Enables Electric Generation Facilities and Heavy Industrial Plants to Identify Control System Security Vulnerabilities

SOMERSET, N.J. and SAN FRANCISCO, April 21 /PRNewswire/ — RSA Conference 2009 — Lumeta Corporation today announced a new cybersecurity audit service for control systems at electric generation facilities, water plants, chemical factories and other heavy industrial infrastructure. The Lumeta Control System Cybersecurity Audit (CSCA) will help clients secure the control system network by employing IPsonar(R), the most widely deployed network discovery solution for large organizations. IPsonar increases visibility into the control system network and its connections, which closes information gaps that have led to unmanaged vulnerabilities in many control system networks.

To date, cybersecurity efforts have focused primarily on an organization’s IP assets, data and systems, and have not adequately addressed another critical component — protecting the network that connects these systems and transports the data.

The new administration has made addressing the weak points in our nation’s cybersecurity a high priority. An important part of those efforts will focus on the areas where our cyber infrastructure meets the nation’s critical infrastructure in the form of control and automation networks. In years past, the control systems for infrastructure such as power plants, nuclear facilities, and dams were self-contained and not connected to other networks. However, in an increasingly all-IP world, connectivity is easily and often automatically accomplished. Frequently, Lumeta has discovered control systems that are either insecurely linked to business networks or, even worse, connected without anyone knowing that the connection exists.

Lumeta Control System Cybersecurity Audit (CSCA) empowers organizations to discover and map the Layer 3 (IP) network, the secure zones and all internal, external, partner and Internet connections. As a result, organizations can:

  • Identify and inventory all existing connections within a control network environment (e.g. internal, external, partner and Internet);
  • Provide validation as connections are moved/changed/decommissioned;
  • Identify the true network perimeter to ensure properly managed entry points;
  • Determine where horizon boundaries exist;
  • Test router/firewall access controls to ensure compliance after network changes;
  • Identify vulnerable devices that are highly susceptible to a security breach; and
  • Identify possible policy violations on individual devices.

“The idea that a terrorist or foreign agent could take down the electrical grid or sabotage a nuclear power plant by hacking into the control systems is no longer a piece of futuristic science fiction,” said Michael Markulec, chief operating officer at Lumeta. “Last year, a nuclear power plant was accidentally shut down for three days as a result of an improperly connected control network and, more recently, national news organizations have reported that foreign entities have penetrated and deployed malicious software onto the electrical grid. Shoring up these vulnerabilities in our physical infrastructure control systems will go a long way toward making our nation more secure.”

About Lumeta Corporation

Lumeta empowers large enterprise and government agencies with global network visibility, allowing them to understand how network change affects security, availability, and compliance.

Lumeta’s IPsonar is the industry’s only network assurance solution that discovers and maps every asset on a network, including assets not currently under management. This capability enables IT professionals to analyze the connectivity between assets and networks, uncover risk patterns, and automate the enforcement of network policies.

With this level of network assurance, IT organizations can harden security, improve business continuity, and deploy new services without impacting its ability to deliver existing services.
