802.11n wireless LAN network delivers high throughput, resiliency and security required for leading research in innovative wireless technologies and business applications
"We chose to partner with Motorola because of the company's continued innovation in wireless technologies, their experience and expertise in designing and deploying wireless networks and the rich feature set of their WLAN portfolio," said Dr.
Established in 2003, the Center is a partnership between the
To enable the advanced study, testing and development of future technologies, the new building required a robust, high-speed network that could handle bandwidth-intensive applications. The network also needed to be flexible and easily configured to support the researcher's broad range of current and future disciplines. Key requirements included support for locationing and RFID technologies, fast roaming for dynamic voice and video applications, and the ability to set different security policies depending on the role of the user. Most importantly, the wireless network had to provide reliable coverage across all areas of the facility despite the challenging radio frequency (RF) environment posed by the high number of wireless devices and applications running over the WLAN infrastructure.
"Motorola has a long heritage of innovation and has been a close partner of the Center since it first opened six years ago, working with its researchers on advancing wireless networking technologies and applications to help enterprises realize the power of mobility," said
Motorola created the Center's 802.11n WLAN solution using its industry-leading LANPlanner software, which enables rapid and accurate design of robust wireless networks. Based on extensive site surveys and design models, which took into account the number of users, the deployment environment, the applications running on the network and the Center's future needs, Motorola recommended a wireless network that combines RFS7000 wireless switches and AP-7131 adaptive APs to deliver gap-free coverage and security. Powered by Motorola's Wireless Next Generation (Wi-NG) architecture, the solution offers a comprehensive feature set including adaptive AP technology for unparalleled resiliency, Real Time Locationing System (RTLS) for real-time asset tracking, SMART RF management to dynamically address changes in the RF environment, and a wireless firewall for maximized Layer 2 and 3 protection. CEWIT is also leveraging Motorola's innovative RF Management Suite 3 (RFMS 3) to continually monitor the health of the network and troubleshoot configuration and coverage issues from one central console. With this comprehensive management solution, IT administrators can quickly spot and resolve problems before they have negative impact on the Center's research and development projects.
Motorola offers a comprehensive portfolio of WLAN infrastructure solutions designed to enable the truly wireless enterprise, regardless of the size of the business -- from large enterprises with locations all over the world to branch offices and small businesses. Delivering Internet protocol (IP) coverage to virtually all spaces both indoors and outdoors, Motorola's innovative wireless enterprise portfolio includes fixed broadband, mesh, enterprise WLAN and Motorola AirDefense wireless security solutions. With time-proven resiliency, security and performance equal to or greater than that of a wired network, Motorola's solutions substantially reduce network deployment and maintenance costs, and ensure the availability of cost-effective wireless connectivity in every corner of the enterprise. The result is the truly wireless enterprise -- offering full mobility at a fraction of the cost of a traditional wired network.
