Beijing Capital International Airport has awarded Unisys the master systems integration contract for core operational systems at the new international terminal in preparations for the 2008 Olympic Games.
The Terminal 3 project is a key national effort and is one of China's Olympic projects.
"Systems integration is vital for the success of the project. We are very pleased to have appointed Unisys as they have the proven capability and experience to be the master systems integrator for this - the largest scale, most advanced and modern international airport hub in China," said Chen Guoxing, chief commander of airport expansion project headquarters.
The new terminal will double the airport's passenger capacity from 27 million to 60 million.
This expansion will allow for the more than several million additional visitors expected to travel to Beijing for the 2008 Olympic and Paralympic games.
As part of this project, Unisys will provide and implement the airport's Ground Operations Information System, which will be based on the Unisys Central Integrated Information Management System, company officials said.
The system provides real time information about flight arrivals and baggage deliveries, while centralizing accounting and other airport functions.
Meanwhile, the system also integrates information flows around the airport, collating and storing data in a central airport database while supplying up-to-date information to the airport community.
"Beijing airport will secure its spot as the Chinese mainland's largest airport, and reach a new milestone in service and operational standards, with the international terminal and IT systems," said Olivier Houri, president of Unisys Global Transportation.
"Our systems integration, project management and domain expertise are helping China's airports - both Beijing Capital and Guangzhou Baiyun, which opened in August 2004 - meet the increased demand of the region's growing air travel industry," Houri noted.
Unisys will also use a 3D system to provide a blueprint of business processes, to assist airport executives to understand current and future operations at the airport.
Analyses performed will allow airport managers a view of interrelations between the systems, processes and strategies designed to meet the airport's business goals.
