Evaluation Based on Ability to Execute and Completeness of Vision

ATLANTA, April 29 /PRNewswire/ – Stonesoft, a provider of proven, innovative network security solutions, today announced that Gartner, Inc. has positioned Stonesoft in the Niche Players quadrant in the Network Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) Appliances Magic Quadrant report. Gartner evaluates vendors based on their ability to execute and completeness of vision.

“We are proud that Gartner has recognized Stonesoft in the network IPS appliances market,” said Paul Johnson, president of Stonesoft Inc. “We believe this evaluation validates the increasing awareness of the strengths of the StoneGate IPS solution. Our commitment is to deliver the next generation technologies needed to optimize the security, availability and manageability of today’s critical networks.”

Stonesoft’s range of StoneGate IPS appliances – for both physical and virtual environments – are designed to protect vulnerable applications and operating systems from the most sophisticated threats. The appliances use the latest technologies to thoroughly inspect and correlate data packets to eliminate the number of false positive identifications, allowing legitimate traffic to continue through the network while stopping malicious content and maintaining high network performance. StoneGate IPS appliances include built-in high availability technologies, transparent (layer-2) firewall capabilities, and SSL inspection for both client- and server-side protection. In addition, the StoneGate IPS is one of the few production-ready IPS available globally to receive the distinguished ICSA Labs’ Network IPS certification.

This is a direct response to the key drivers behind the demand for IPS, according to Gartner, Inc.: “The primary driver for network IPS remains protecting the enterprise from network-based attacks that target system and software vulnerabilities.” Moreover, “the nature of the most damaging attacks on businesses continues to evolve. Financially motivated attacks don’t simply go after unpatched PCs and servers; they increasingly are using targeted malware that does not seek to exploit vulnerable software. These targeted attacks (such as bot-net-based attacks) use social engineering techniques to trick users into installing malicious software, and then exploit systems from within the perimeter.”*

Gartner evaluates vendors annually based on the following evaluation criteria: ability to execute, which includes product or service, overall viability, sales execution/pricing, market responsiveness and track record, market execution and customer experience and operations; and completeness of vision, comprising of market understanding and strategy, sales strategy, offering strategy, business model, vertical, industry and geographic strategy and innovation.

Previously, Gartner positioned Stonesoft solutions in the Challengers quadrant in the Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Network Firewalls report published in November 2008.
