Herzing University Students Win Multiple Awards for Academic Achievement

MADISON, Wis., May 5 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- This spring, Herzing University Madison students took top honors in three collegiate competitions. Campus President, Don Madelung, stated, "This is equivalent to David meets Goliath in academic performance by some very talented students under the guidance of some extremely supportive and encouraging faculty at our campus."
Competition 1: Latoria Payton wins GREAT award
Alumna Latoria Payton was awarded the Career College Association's 2009 GREAT Award (Graduate Recognition for Excellence, Achievement and Talent) at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. on March 12, 2009. Ms. Payton was 1 of 4 recipients selected from 130 recommendations for her perseverance in overcoming extraordinary circumstances to earn her college degree and become successful in her career field.
A single mother to six children, Latoria attended school full-time while working part-time, and was very active as a mentor, tutor, 2-year Student Council president, and secretary of Herzing's FBLA-PBL chapter. A 2008 Bachelor's in Accounting graduate, Latoria works at CFS, Virchow Krause as a Cash Accountant with plans to continue her education in forensic accounting.
Competition 2: FBLA-PBL students place 1st in 7 categories
In an unprecedented meeting of the minds between many top colleges and universities in the state, Herzing University Future Business Leaders of America Chapter (Phi Beta Lambda) students stunned their competition by placing in the top 3 in many of the competitive categories in the annual state-wide Spring Leadership Competition held April 16-17, 2009. Other entrants included: UW-Madison, UW-Whitewater, UW-Oshkosh, Ripon College, ITT-Green Bay, and MSOE.
Winners below qualify to compete at the National FLBA-PBL Conference in Anaheim, California this June.

Because Cody Esser ranked first in Parliamentary Procedure, he is now the Wisconsin PBL State Parliamentarian.
First-time conference attendant, student A. Joe Ramirez, said, "The conference really opened my eyes to the importance of not just doing a job in the business world, but actually being professional in your business."
The largest and oldest business student organization in the world with 250,000 students preparing for careers in business and related fields, FBLA-PBL's National Awards Program rewards excellence in a broad range of business and career-related areas. Don Majors, Assistant Professor of Business at Herzing University Madison, is chapter advisor and meets with the students weekly.
Pat Ward, Associate Professor of Business at Herzing Madison, was recently appointed as State Advisor for Wisconsin PBL and will serve a 3-yr. term on the National FBLA-PBL Awards Panel.
Competition 3: Game Development students place 1st or 2nd in 7 of 9 categories at Game Fair
Herzing University Game Development students participated in the 4th Annual Midwest Game Fair on Saturday, March 7, 2009, in Green Bay, Wis. Herzing students placed 1st or 2nd in 7 of the 9 categories, including the highly-coveted Best of Show.

Scott Langteau, COO for Sparks Unlimited, expressed how impressed he was with the Herzing team's presentation of the Speed Game Concept Event. He stated, "Everyone here should watch the video of your presentation so they can see how a presentation is supposed to be done." He continued to say that their "Gremlins" game concept was excellent and he hoped to see actual production of the game.
This annual event showcases game development degree students and programs, both individually and in team-based development competitions. Erik Pederson, Director of Herzing University Center for Game Development, works closely with students to provide them with high-level skills and career-focused experiences.
