EBay to Unveil ‘Anything Points’ Program
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Online auctioneer eBay will announce a program Tuesday that lets buyers use airline miles and points from other customer benefit programs to purchase items on the Web-based auction service, a company spokesman said.
“EBay Anything Points” can be converted from programs run by companies including Sprint Corp., Hilton Hotels Corp., McAfee Security, American Airlines and Points.com. The auction company said it will invite other vendors into the program in the future.
For example, San Jose-based eBay would convert a buyer’s frequent flier miles to cash that the company would pay the product seller. Each eBay “Anything Point” deposited into an eBay member’s PayPal account is equal to a penny – cash which can be applied to purchases on eBay.
Both the seller and buyer must enroll in the free program, eBay spokesman Kevin Pursglove said.
“It opens up the largest possible rewards catalog in existence,” Pursglove said.
Members who sign up for certain Sprint calling plans can earn eBay Anything Points, as can consumers who purchase McAfee Security’s anti-virus and firewall software.
