Using more than $300,000 in state and federal grant money, the Marshfield Airport Commission will install an automated weather observation system at the town's airport this fall.
"We are thrilled that we have been awarded a grant for this very important project," airport general manager Ann Pollard said. "This has been one of my top priorities during my 16 years here at the airport."
The system will track wind speed and direction, temperature, precipitation, barometric pressure, dew point and visibility, and detect lightning. The information it gathers will be shared with the National Weather Service and a national airspace information network for pilots.
The weather station's primary function will be to provide accurate data for pilots flying through the Marshfield area. They currently have to rely on weather data from airports in Plymouth, Norwood and Boston.
As for the general public, "our weather forecasts for the South Shore will be more accurate, and real-time weather data will be available on stations such as the Weather Channel," Pollard said. "When Marshfield residents are watching the Weather Channel for local conditions, the data currently being displayed is from Plymouth. As we all know, a few miles can mean a big difference in conditions, especially close to the coast."
A $311,600 Federal Aviation Administration grant and a $8,200 Massachusetts Aeronautics Commission grant will be used to pay for the weather station. The airport will contribute $8,200.
Pollard and Massachusetts Aeronautics Commission Chairman Arthur C. Allen said Marshfield's state legislators, Sen. Robert Hedlund, R- Weymouth, and Rep. Frank Hynes, D-Marshfield, deserved thanks for helping secure the state funding.
