Red Bend Software Reaches Milestone of Half a Billion Mobile Devices

Firmware Over-the-Air (FOTA) Updating Reaches Mass Market Adoption

WALTHAM, Mass., May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Red Bend Software, the market leader in Mobile Software Management (MSM), today announced that it has reached the significant milestone of shipping its software in more than half a billion mobile devices worldwide. As of Q1 2009, Red Bend's market-leading firmware over-the-air (FOTA) updating software reached 520 million mobile devices and 336 device models from leading manufacturers, including Sony Ericsson, LG, Sharp and Benny Wave. With more than half a billion mobile phones now capable of updating mobile software over the air, Red Bend's FOTA solution has reached mass market adoption.

During the first quarter, market research firm Ovum named Red Bend the market leader in FOTA with 60% share of FOTA-enabled mobile phones. In addition, global demand for standards-based device management (DM) software, including in the Android platform and WiMAX devices, expanded Red Bend's global licensees to 45 during the quarter. Red Bend's MSM solutions enable the mobile value chain to sell new software and services, achieve faster time to market of new devices and applications, and improve the mobile user experience with feature enhancements. The result is increased revenue, customer satisfaction and brand loyalty.

Highlights from the first quarter include:

• 3G Era Drives MSM Growth in China -- With the rollout of 3G networks in China, China's largest mobile operators are now requiring standards-based DM and FOTA on all mobile handsets and wireless devices. During Q1, Red Bend signed deals with high-profile companies in the region, including SIMCom Wireless Solutions, the world's third largest cellular module supplier; and Haier (Qing Dao) Telecom Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of the Haier Group, the world's fourth largest household appliances manufacturer. In addition, leading China OEM Benny Wave, maker of the popular K-Touch brand, shipped Red Bend's software in 20 new devices in Q1.

• Android Phones Adopt MSM -- This quarter, Borqs International Holding Corp. chose Red Bend's FOTA and DM solutions exclusively for its Android software platform, Open Mobile System (OMS). The growing popularity of Google Android is creating demand for Red Bend's cross-platform, standards-based MSM solutions, with more deployments expected as OEMs and platform providers bring Android-based devices to market this year.

• WiMAX Requires Device Management -- With the customer announcements of Intel and Beceem, Red Bend's vDirect Mobile(TM) device management client is rapidly being adopted by WiMAX service providers, chipset makers and equipment manufacturers in the United States, Japan and EMEA. WiMAX service providers are challenged to provision millions of new subscribers as well as manage millions of devices that will operate on the network. vDirect Mobile includes built-in support for the WiMAX management object from the WiMAX Forum, ensuring faster time to market of standards-compliant WiMAX devices.
