AT&T Unveils Plan To Double Wireless Network Speeds

Posted on: Thursday, 28 May 2009, 06:15 CDT

AT&T revealed its plans to double its wireless data network speeds by 2011 as reported by Reuters.

The improvements will begin later this year.

As the nation’s second largest wireless provider, AT&T plans to expand its existing wireless network to 20 new metropolitan areas this year and will make improvements to its High Speed Packet Access technology which will allow faster internet browsing.

The enhancement to the web network is expected to increase surfing speeds from 3 megabits per second to 7.2 megabits per second.

These speeds represent the networks hypothetical speed, which can be greatly influenced and slow once multiple users are factored into the equation.

The upgrades will be financed by the capital spending budget announce earlier this year.

AT&T will have wireless technologies, including network cards and smart phones, compatible with these enhancements available to customers later this year.

The company also plans to begin testing on the next generation of network technology known as Long Term Evolution or LTE in 2010.  AT&T plans to incorporate LTE into its systems in 2011.
