Toshiba Adds Extra Storage and Intel Centrino Mobile Technology to Portege Series Notebooks

Posted on: Tuesday, 8 July 2003, 06:00 CDT

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 8, 2003--

Latest Toshiba Portege Enhancements Include Adding 1.8-Inch, 40GB

Storage Capacity to Industry's Lightest, Thinnest

Centrino-Based Ultraportable

Continuing to demonstrate its leadership with innovative mobile computing technology products, Toshiba's Computer Systems Group (CSG) today announced it has added two products featuring Intel(R) Centrino(TM) mobile technology to its award-winning line of the Portege(R) Series notebook computers. The Portege R100 Series adds the industry's first 1.8-inch, 40 gigabyte (GB)(a) hard disk drive (HDD) and integrated wireless connectivity, making it one of the world's lightest, thinnest Centrino-based ultraportable notebook. In addition, the Portege M100 Series combines a sleek design with a full-width keyboard, integrated wireless connectivity and built-in optical drive, along with the cost savings and convenience of using the same docking technology as other Toshiba corporate notebooks.

"Toshiba's Portege Series offer users robust performance without any added price premium for portability," said Carl Pinto, director of product marketing, Toshiba CSG. "Our customers tell us they want notebooks with features and performance of a desktop with no compromises. We designed these notebooks with them in mind."

Toshiba's Portege R100 and Portege M100 Series of notebooks feature Intel Centrino mobile technology, including an Intel Pentium(R) M processor (ultra-low-voltage 1.00GHz processor for the Portege R100, and 1.20GHz processor for the Portege M100), and Intel PRO Wireless Network Connection 802.11b technology. Each also features a large, 40GB HDD, increasing the capacity of the Portege R100 Series, enabling highly powerful features in a sleek and compact design (Portege M100 Series expandable to 60GB HDD). The Portege R100 and Portege M100 also incorporate a broad range of connectivity options including integrated Wi-Fi(R) (IEEE 802.11b or 802.11a/b), 10/100 Ethernet, V.92 modem, and fast Infrared port. Each also includes two USB 2.0 ports to support the higher I/O bandwidth requirements of today's peripherals.

The Portege R100 weighs an industry-low 2.4 pounds and features a primary Lithium-Ion Polymer battery that delivers up to two hours of battery life(b) in a smaller form factor than alternative notebook batteries. Included with the unit is a second slim, lightweight extended battery that provides up to four and a half extra hours of battery life(b), for up to six and a half hours of mobile use.

The Portege M100 extends battery life(b) to up to 8.5 hours (with a second battery), and adds an integrated SelectBay(TM) DVD-ROM drive. It shares common docking equipment with Toshiba's Tecra(R) line of corporate notebooks to reduce overall IT costs. In addition, both the Portege M100 and Portege R100 also include ConfigFree(TM) software so that users can troubleshoot network issues for hassle-free connectivity.
