AMBER Ready Foundation Donates In-Car Printers to Help Law Enforcement Find Missing Children in Philadelphia

Parents Attend Child Safety Night to Learn Strategies to Keep Philadelphia Kids Safe

ROCKAWAY, N.J., June 9 /PRNewswire/ – More than 200 parents, child safety advocates and law enforcement officials gathered today in Philadelphia at a Child Safety Night organized by the AMBER Ready Foundation to learn about strategies, tools and resources available to keep children safe.

The AMBER Ready Foundation also donated printers to the Philadelphia Police Department’s Missing Persons and Special Victims Unit to help reduce the time it takes to begin the search for a missing child. The printers will be installed in patrol cars and will allow law enforcement officials to quickly print posters of a missing child or a wanted fugitive. Used with the new AMBER Ready Program, law enforcement will have the tools to reduce the time needed to put a missing child on alert.

“When it comes to a missing child, time is precious,” said Detective Susan Doughton, a representative from the Philadelphia Police Department’s Missing Persons and Special Victims Unit. “These printers will help our officers focus on the search and increase the chances of a successful recovery.”

Participants were also introduced to the AMBER Ready Program, which provides parents with the technology to create, store and lock their children’s vital identity information, including photographs, in their cell phones. In the event the child should go missing, with the click of a button on the cell phone, the child’s profile and picture can be sent immediately by law enforcement to police communications, patrol vehicles, other police agencies, the media and the AMBER Alert Network.

Up to 1.3 million children are reported missing each year. When a violent crime is tied to an abduction, 99% of violent crimes occur within the first four hours that the child is missing. This is a serious problem and the AMBER Ready Program drastically reduces the time needed to activate an AMBER Alert, greatly increasing the chances of a successful recovery of the child.

The Philadelphia event was part of a nationwide AMBER Ready Foundation Child Safety Tour to inform and educate parents about the most up-to-date Internet and child safety tips from national experts on the topics. Featured speakers included AMBER Ready CEO and program creator, Kai D. Patterson; AMBER Ready Senior Vice President and the former Director of Public Safety for Bergen County, New Jersey, Frank Del Vecchio; and Internet safety expert, Suzanne Stanford.
