Hughes Introduces Multi-Satellite Gateway for HX System

Posted on: Thursday, 11 June 2009, 06:00 CDT

Latest enhancement of advanced HX System enables easy expansion to multiple transponders and multiple satellites

GERMANTOWN, Md., June 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Hughes Network Systems, LLC (HUGHES), the global leader in broadband satellite networks and services, today announced the availability of its new HX Multi-Satellite Gateway, the latest enhancement of its advanced HX System. The new HX Gateway is pre-wired for easy multi-satellite/multi-transponder expansion and can be customized to support additional satellites through the HX Expansion Kit.

As the core element and HX System master, the HX Gateway performs network management and dynamic bandwidth assignment functions. The multi-satellite capability comes with a new release of system software which also includes a number of enhancements that benefit satellite broadband operators, such as:

  • Enhanced TCP/IP acceleration processing, which nearly doubles the throughput capability of HX routers to more than 10Mbps; and
  • End-to-end VLAN tagging, which facilitates management of VLAN partitions.

Additionally, the HX Gateway offers the option to include the high-performance Configurable Demodulation Subsystem (CDS), which supports 10 Msps of return channel throughput and is configurable with up to 9 separate TDMA channels. The 10 Msps CDS also supports enhanced Doppler correction and spreading inroutes, which is ideal for broadband mobility applications on planes, trains and ships.

"Our new HX Multi-Satellite Gateway has been designed to unlock the maximum value from high-quality, IP broadband networking, including specialized applications such as mobility and mesh," said David Jupin, vice president, International Division, Hughes. "It makes it easy for operators to expand broadband services across virtually all multi-satellite coverage situations, while maintaining the powerful network management, extensive diagnostics and scalability of our proven HX System."

Efficiency and flexibility in utilizing satellite bandwidth is at the core of the HX System design. Based on the industry-leading Internet Protocol over Satellite (IPoS) standard, endorsed by ETSI, ITU, and TIA, the HX System can be readily configured to provide a specified Quality of Service (QoS) for each link tailored to a particular terminal, enabling operators to provide services tailored to a customer's specific requirements. An optimized bandwidth allocation scheme is employed to mitigate cost of space segment, whereby idle terminals release their bandwidth assignments to a shared pool. HX remote terminals utilize FDMA/TDMA channels to communicate with the HX Gateway in star mode, or simultaneously to other terminals in mesh mode, with each channel supporting data rates up to 3.2 Mbps.
