Posted on: Monday, 11 July 2005, 12:00 CDT

Minnesota's Rochester Public library, a leader in offering information and recreational materials in new and accessible formats, announced today that they are making downloadable audio books available to patrons through a new online digital library service (http://digital.rochesterpubliclibrary.org). 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, patrons can download titles from the library's online audiobook collection and listen to them on their home computers, burn them to a CD, or transfer them to compatible WMA/MP3 devices. Technology for the new service is provided through OverDrive, the national leader in downloadable media for libraries.

With hundreds of exceptional titles spanning all popular genres, the Rochester Public Library's new online downloadable audio book collection is sure to have something for everyone. The collection includes a wide variety of materials from classics and children's titles to popular books from best selling authors such as Nora Roberts, Dean Koontz, and Robin Cook. There are also a wide variety of non-fiction titles to choose from including popular business titles, self-help titles, and many more.

According to Carrie Farrow, Communications Director for the Rochester Public Library, "The new service is another way for us to make access to our materials even easier. Now, if a patron discovers at 10:30 PM that they need a book for a long car drive the next morning there's no need to worry. Even though the library building is closed, they can go online and download a talking book, burn it to CD or transfer it to a portable audio player and enjoy it throughout their trip."

Patrons visiting the site will find that getting started with library's new digital audio books is as easy as shopping online. They can visit the library webpage at www.rochesterpubliclibrary.org and click on the link for 'downloadable audio books' or they can go directly to http://digital.rochesterpubliclibrary.org. The site offers a number of convenient ways to browse, search and select titles from the downloadable collection. Once they're ready, patrons make their selection, enter their library card number and pin, and then download the titles directly to their computer.

Patrons can check out up to 5 downloadable audio books at a time and have 14 days to enjoy them. Once the loan period of is up, the files expire and title is automatically "returned," so there are no parts to lose and never any late fees!
