AMR Research Study Identifies Top University Supply Chain Programs in U.S.

Posted on: Tuesday, 16 June 2009, 09:00 CDT

Penn State and Michigan State Rank Highest with Arizona State, Ohio State, MIT, University of Tennessee, and Georgia Tech Close Behind

BOSTON, June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- AMR Research, the leading research firm focused on the global supply chain and its supporting technologies, released a report today that identified the top U.S.-based supply chain programs. The report found that Penn State University and Michigan State University lead in terms of industry value, program depth, and program scope.

AMR Research surveyed 126 companies and 19 academic institutions to determine which U.S. programs best prepare students to manage increasingly global integrated supply chain organizations. The universities were measured across a total of 13 metrics, which includes number of recruiting mentions, supply chain course and program offerings, and best program mentions.

"Our assessment showed many strong programs, with innovative teaching approaches and relevant research being conducted," said David Aquino, research director at AMR Research and lead author on the report. "The best programs create a more fully formed supply chain professional that allows a quick transition from recruit to being a productive member of their new organization."

AMR Research's growing body of research on talent development and organizational design highlights the increasing number of capabilities that a supply chain management professional needs early in his or her career. The supply chain capabilities outlined in a previous AMR Research report are: plan, source, make, deliver, customer management, post-sales support, new product design and launch, strategy and change management, performance management and analytics, technology enablement, and governance.

Unfortunately, most academic institutions are only partially meeting the most pressing needs from industry, with supply chain programs on average teaching only 5 of 11 academic areas needed, inconsistently applying supply chain technology, and not ensuring sufficient applied knowledge transfer.

Highlights from the report include:

  • MIT and University of Michigan had the highest average graduate base salaries at $116,000 and $100,000, respectively.
  • Penn State has a large number of students, with more than 800 involved in the program. They also have 29 full-time professors focused on supply chain management.
  • Michigan State offers over 39 supply chain courses and requires an average of eight to graduate.
