Firms Aim To Earn Profit With New Twitter Role-Playing Game

Posted on: Tuesday, 23 June 2009, 12:28 CDT

Lolplaying and Super Rewards on Tuesday announced a cooperative effort to bring a new role-playing game to Twitter.

The new game, “140 Mafia” was announced during the 2009 Social Gaming Summit in San Francisco.

“140 Mafia” marks the first use of Super Rewards’ virtual currency platform to monetize games on Twitter.

The new game is completely text-based, and users are allowed to form their “mob” by recruiting other players.

"Many people never thought games would be successful on text-based distribution channels like Twitter," Jason Bailey, chief executive officer and co-founder of Super Rewards, said in a statement.

"But not only are the games proving to be popular, we've now made it possible for game publishers to earn reliable revenue while enhancing users' game experience. We're taking our monetization solution to a whole new level by allowing game publishers to effectively reach and monetize an untapped market segment."

Super Rewards’ virtual currency platform has been successful in turning a profit on social networks including MySpace and Facebook. The company’s 40-employee staff is projected to earn an estimated $100 million this year.

But Twitter has yet to find its identity in terms of earning profits, despite its wild popularity.

Bailey pointed out that he’s “already making more money from Twitter than Twitter is itself,” and added that other game developers are likely to see the microblogging site as a new format to turn profits.

Bailey said that as gaming on Twitter begins to grow, the site should ask developers for its share of the sales.

The Associated Press attempted to contact Twitter co-founder Biz Stone, but he didn’t respond with a comment. The AP added that Stone has previously mentioned that the social network has most of $55 million it has raised from venture capitalists.
