Jul. 9--Three local companies will share in a $1.2 billion contract to overhaul the areas of Navy ships where sailors sleep, eat and wash up.
The five-year contract covers mostly aircraft carriers located on both coasts and overseas. The work will entail ripping out and replacing sleeping racks, heads and kitchen galleys.
The companies competed against one another for the contract, and each was awarded a different amount: Q.E.D. Systems Inc. of Virginia Beach received $415 million; Tecnico Corp. of Chesapeake received $407.9 million ; and George G. Sharp Inc. of Virginia Beach won $392.7 million.
Nicholas Clark, program manager at George Sharp, said the company previously held the contract and is happy to win it again.
