CITTIO and Safari Books Online Deliver Industry's First Content-Driven Event Model for Network Management

Posted on: Tuesday, 12 July 2005, 09:00 CDT

CITTIO, Inc., the innovation leader in network monitoring and operations software, today announced that it has partnered with Safari Books Online to embed links to an electronic reference library of more than 3000 online technical books, including content from O'Reilly, Cisco Press, Addison-Wesley, Microsoft Press, Adobe Press, Macromedia Press, and others into WatchTower(TM), CITTIO's network monitoring software. CITTIO and Safari Books Online will provide the industry's first content-driven event model in which a network event is routed to a technician along with relevant content on how to address the event -- reducing mean time to repair from hours to minutes.

"We are committed to using innovative methods to deliver technical content directly into the hands of IT professionals," said Sean Devine, managing director of Safari Books Online. "We partnered with CITTIO because this company has a complete, unique vision for developing a Content-Driven Event model for network management. CITTIO's approach enables IT managers to achieve maximum effectiveness in network operations."

"Safari Books Online is the industry's most credible content source for network experts, and we are honored to be the first partner in this exciting new initiative," said Jamie Lerner, CEO of CITTIO. "Comparative statistics, network tests, and alarms have dramatically reduced the time required to discover a network event. The next step is to slash the up-to-8 hours of research time to develop a fix. Beginning with the relationship with Safari, CITTIO will break ground in reducing mean time to repair."

The Content-Driven Event Model

The network management industry has made significant strides during the last decade in identifying adverse network events and routing information to technicians. However, because of the increasing complexity and heterogeneity of today's networks, technicians may spend 30-70% of their time combing a variety of resources to determine the proper resolution path. And few network management teams have an automated means to institutionalize their new-found knowledge, often putting colleagues in the position of re-inventing the wheel each time an event occurs.

With today's announcement, CITTIO and Safari Books Online are at the forefront of a new and more efficient approach -- the Content-Driven Event model. With this methodology, a network event not only has a time-stamp, description, and origin of the problem but also pre-researched, credible content describing how to address the issue. This two-pronged approach enables administrators to move immediately from event notification to rectification.

Combining Safari Books Online's vast library of technology reference content from a growing list of leading sources with WatchTower's monitoring and management capabilities delivers the first Content-Driven Event network management system. This system extends CITTIO's mission to simplify network operations and make administrators more effective.

"Connecting to the right content is only the beginning," said Lerner. "CITTIO is already working on a number of unique components, including a content repository that will allow users to search industry content as well as create their own corporate documentation and best practices to share with other corporate IT departments."

The Safari Books Online content is available within WatchTower later this quarter. Additional components of the content correlation engine will be available later this year.

About Safari(R) Books Online

Safari Books Online is a joint venture between the industry's leading technical publishers, O'Reilly Media, Inc., and The Pearson Technology Group. Safari's flagship service, Safari(R) Tech Books Online, is the premier electronic reference library for programming and IT departments. A growing number of titles from other publishers such as Microsoft Press and Thomson South-Western are also available. Leveraging its powerful repository of thousands of leading technical, business and text books, Safari recently launched two new products: SafariX Text Books Online, which allows students to subscribe to web versions of their text books at a significant savings versus the print edition, and SafariU, an education portal for creating custom print textbooks and online learning resources.
