LG Considers Expansion Of LCD Production Capacity

Posted on: Wednesday, 1 July 2009, 16:19 CDT

LG Display is considering building an additional production line for its flat-screen TV panels as the LCD industry slowly recovers amid healthy TV sales.

In a filing with the Korea Exchange on Wednesday, the world's No. 2 maker of liquid crystal display (LCD) said it was considering plans to enlarge its "eighth-generation" production facility.  However, the company said no final decisions have been made.

A spokesman for the South Korea-based company had previously told Reuters that the board would likely review the plan later this month.

Following a long slide, prices for LCD panels made a modest recovery during the second quarter of 2009.  The move has LCD makers increasing output to satisfy demand in China and other developed markets.

Many are either adding new production lines or considering plans to do so.

While late-generation facilities use larger glasses, yielding larger screens and reducing costs, they are more expensive to build.  Some firms believe the existing 8G standard is adequate for the time being.

In June, Taiwan's AU Optronics Corp., the third largest LCD maker, said it was looking into plans to build a line with 8.5-generation technology to allow mass production as soon as 2011.

Japan-based Sharp Corp. plans to begin production in October at new LCD plant. The $3.9 billion facility would be the first plant in the world to use 10th-generation glass substrates.

Previous reports have said that Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., which makes LCD TV panels as part of a joint venture with Sony Corp., is considering using even larger 11th-generation glass.
