Facebook Hopes To Generate More Relevance With New Privacy Settings

Posted on: Thursday, 2 July 2009, 13:50 CDT

As Facebook’s population grows beyond the 200-million-user mark, the social network is rolling out a new set of privacy standards that will allow members to edit what their friends and family members see.

Facebook announced plans on Wednesday to provide users with new settings to control what status updates, comments, photos and profile information they share with members of their friends list.

“When tools are simple, users are more likely to use them," Chris Kelly, Facebook's chief privacy officer, told reporters on Wednesday.

Kelly added that Facebook hopes the changes will allow its members “to be able to share information with as many or as few people as they choose."

Marissa Gluck, managing partner at Radar Research, told USA Today that the new privacy settings allow the social network to "use the collective knowledge of its members to become a breaking news site."

The move is seen as a direct attempt to challenge Twitter’s growing influence as a source of continuously updated breaking news.

"It leverages the strength of Facebook — the friend network — while also making it a broadcast medium similar to Twitter," Charlene Li, founder of digital-strategy consulting firm Altimeter Group, told USA Today.

Facebook also announced that it is eliminating its regional networks, stating that they have led to too much confusion over how members from outside networks can view profile information.
