Sony Announces Netbook Development Plans

On Tuesday, Sony Corp announced plans to launch a new Vaio laptop that will sell for around $629 in Japan in August, making its first steps into the fast-growing netbook market.
Netbook PCs are smaller and cheaper than your typical laptop computer, and they are generally optimized for smaller computer tasks like Web browsing and email.
Taiwan's Asustek pioneered the idea in 2007. Other global brands like Acer Inc., Hewlett-Packard Co and Dell Inc. joined in later with their own lines.
A Sony spokeswoman said that the company hopes the new netbook design and high-resolution display will help it get a foothold into the market.
The new device by Sony is equipped with Microsoft's Corp's Windows XP operating system and Intel Corp's Atom processor. It will also have an LCD display with a resolution of 1,366-by-768 pixels, compared to the 1,024-by-600 pixel displays that other netbook devices have.
Sony did not reveal its sales target for the new netbook, but the company is shooting to have its overall Vaio PC sales to 6.2 million units this year, compared to 5.8 million last year.
According to research firm IDC, worldwide netbook PC shipments in 2009 are expected to double to 26.4 million units.
