“Consumer Cellular has always appreciated the basic service needs of some of our members and has committed consistently to making flexible cell phone service available to them at affordable rates,” said Howard Byck, senior vice president of lifestyle products and services for AARP Services, Inc. “Given the current economic environment, we are pleased that Consumer Cellular is offering even more value to the AARP’s nearly 40 million members.”

Consumer Cellular increased the number of minutes by 25 percent on the newly enhanced plans, which includes the popular “Anywhere 250″ plan, previously the “Anywhere 200″ plan. AARP members already enrolled in a Consumer Cellular plan will automatically be upgraded to the new rate plans and receive the additional minutes at no extra charge.

“Consumer Cellular provides simple and straightforward cell phone calling plans that best suit our customers’ needs,” said John Marick, Consumer Cellular CEO. “By providing additional minutes to select plans, AARP members across the country can further enjoy the freedom and convenience of wireless service with simple phones, affordable plans and no contracts.”

According to a recent AARP survey, less expensive and simple cell phones and plans are highly valued by AARP members. More than 90 percent of the AARP members surveyed reported having a cell phone, however the majority used fewer than 250 minutes per month, which is nearly 200 minutes below the national average (as reported by J.D. Power).

When selecting a cell phone service provider, AARP members cited the following characteristics as “extremely important:”

  • Price of the ongoing service (77 percent)
  • Quality of cellular service (78 percent)
  • Coverage area (74 percent)
  • Company reputation (87 percent)

Consumer Cellular offers a variety of affordable plans starting as low as $9.50 per month, which includes an exclusive five percent discount for AARP members. Furthermore, AARP members are not required to sign long-term contracts and can cancel service at anytime without penalty. AARP believes that this unique feature will serve as a catalyst for other wireless companies to better meet the changing needs of Americans 50+.
