Softbank to Lease Cellphone Service Network to Other Firms

Posted on: Wednesday, 13 July 2005, 12:01 CDT

Jul. 13--TOKYO -- The Softbank group plans to lease its planned mobile phone service network to other companies when it is licensed to enter the market, a group company executive said Wednesday.

"We would like to provide business opportunities to many companies wishing to enter the mobile phone service business" through leased networks, Junichi Miyagawa, managing director of Softbank BB Corp., the Internet access service unit of Softbank Corp., said.

Last December, Sofbank BB applied to the government for a license to launch cellphone services.

Companies that provide cellphone services via leased networks are called mobile virtual network operators and their numbers are increasing overseas. Among them is the Virgin Group of Britain serving as a MVNO in its home country and the United States.

Mobile phone operator Vodafone K.K. and Internet access service provider eAccess Ltd., which has filed for a cellphone service license, have already declared plans to lease their networks to other companies.
