IRVINE, Calif., Aug. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC) today announced that Toshiba's latest generation solid state drives (SSD), based on award winning 43nm MLC NAND-flash, are now shipping to manufacturers of more than five leading mobile PC brands. Toshiba's SSDs are initially available to OEMs only, in capacities of 64GB(1), 128GB, 256GB and 512GB, in 1.8-inch or 2.5-inch drive enclosures, targeted for use in notebook computers, gaming and home entertainment systems.
An advanced multi-channel MLC controller enables a maximum sequential read speed of 230MB(2) per second (MBps)(3) and maximum sequential write speed of 180MBps(2,3). A proprietary wear leveling algorithm optimizes the performance, reliability and lifetime of the drive. AES data encryption is available as an option to prevent unauthorized data access.
"The customer qualifications we've received attest to the enhanced performance of our second generation drives in improving the overall computing experience through reduction in wait times and faster boot and application loading," said Scott Nelson, vice president, memory, for TAEC. "Our SSD read and write speeds are among the fastest in the industry, based on our benchmarking, including H2benchw scores(4)."
"Solid state drives offer not only significant performance and power advantages over hard disk drives, but compelling lower total cost of ownership over the lifetime of the notebook," said Gregory Wong, president, Forward Insights. "Savings in total cost of ownership are particularly relevant to OEMs and business users in the current economic environment."

(1) When used herein in relation to memory density, gigabyte and/or GB means 1,024x1,024x1,024 = 1,073,741,824 bytes. Usable capacity may be less. For details, please refer to specifications.
(2) Published read and write speed specifications. Actual read and write speeds may vary depending on the system and application.
(3) For purposes of measuring read and write speed in this context, 1 Megabyte or MB = 1,000,000 bytes. Read and write speed may vary depending on the controller, read and write conditions, such as file sizes you read and/or write.
(4) Based on internal TAEC benchmarks using H2benchw Ver. 3.13, the Toshiba 43nm SSD achieved maximum read throughput of 225MBps and maximum write score of 201MBps. Comparative data for other manufacturers from published Tom's Hardware SSD performance charts, 2009, http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/2009-flash-ssd-charts/benchmarks,48.html
(5) For purposes of measuring read and write speed in this context, 1 Gigabit or Gb = 1,000,000,000 bits. Read and write speed may vary depending on the controller, read and write conditions, such as file sizes you read and/or write.
(6) The MTTF (Mean Time to Failure) is not a guarantee or estimate of product life; it is a statistical value related to mean failure rates for a large number of products which may not accurately reflect actual operation. Actual operating life of the product may not resemble the MTTF.
