California Virtual Academies Students Log On Back to School

Posted on: Tuesday, 25 August 2009, 10:33 CDT

Online lessons, shipments of off-line education materials bring school to the student

SIMI VALLEY, Calif., Aug. 25 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- This time of year students across the country prepare to head back to school. But for thousands of California students their school is just a click away through the California Virtual Academies (CAVA). September 8th marks CAVA's first day of school.

CAVA is an innovative, tuition-free public charter school that offers students all across the state the opportunity to receive an excellent and comprehensive public education at home, on the road, or wherever an Internet connection can be found. CAVA uses the award-winning academic program developed by K12 Inc., the nation's largest provider of online school programs for students in kindergarten through high school.

CAVA is a unique public school that gives students the opportunity to receive an excellent education using powerful technology and the engaging K12 curriculum. CAVA also gives students the opportunity to access exciting courses such as music, art, and world languages -- classes that may not be available in other schools.

"Teachers have been preparing all summer for another successful school year," said Katrina Abston, CAVA Head of School. "Throughout the summer we have been working hard to prepare our students and parents for the upcoming year. There is a lot of excitement in our school community. In particular we are thrilled to be continuing our foreign language program beginning in the elementary grades."

Throughout the summer, CAVA students have been receiving boxes full of education materials that were shipped to their home in preparation for the new school year. Items included textbooks, workbooks, classical stories, math and science supplies, maps, art books, instruments, CDs, and much more.

CAVA will be holding "Back to School Meet the Teacher" park days throughout the month of September. Over 50 events will take place across the state including the San Diego, San Francisco and Los Angeles areas. Visit www.k12.com/cava for the complete list of events.

California Virtual Academies is a popular school option for its highly individualized approach to learning. Each student receives a personalized learning program using the K12 curriculum that is designed to meet their education needs. Students are able to work at home at the pace that is right for them, and the format allows for greater flexibility than is typically possible in traditional schools. Students access engaging web-based lessons through the K12 Online School (OLS) and also use off-line education materials that complement the online elements of the program. Highly qualified and state certified CAVA teachers assign lessons, provide instruction, and regularly interact with students and parents via email, web-based classrooms, online discussions, phone, and face-to-face meetings.

CAVA is still accepting new enrollments and continues to host free information sessions and events across the state for families who are interested in the school. A list of all events can be found at www.k12.com/cava.

For the media: If you are interested in speaking with a CAVA family or teacher in your local area, or a school administrator, contact CAVA Head of School Katrina Abston at kabston@k12.com or (805) 581-0202.
