FedEx Begins Work on New West Sacramento Facility

Posted on: Thursday, 14 July 2005, 12:01 CDT

Jul. 14--In a sign that West Sacramento has not abandoned its blue collar roots, on Wednesday the freight shipping arm of FedEx broke ground on a new facility within the city's industrial district.

When complete in 2006, the new facility will more than double the size of FedEx Freight's existing cargo shipping center. FedEx Freight caters to the shipping needs of companies needing to move large goods that don't fill an entire truck.

Company officials on hand Wednesday said West Sacramento's business-friendly government and location helped persuade them to expand.

"West Sacramento is ideally located," said Keith Lovetro, president and chief executive operator of FedEx Freight West.

FedEx isn't the only shipper in town. Located near both Interstate 80 and Interstate 5, the city is also home to a United Parcel Service processing center and a U.S. Postal Service regional processing center. A handful of other companies that rely on quick shipping are also in town.

The new center, off Channel Drive, offers room to grow, FedEx officials said. It will offer 116,000 square feet and 154 dock doors, compared to the old 52,000-square-foot Parkway Boulevard center, with 127 dock doors.

The center employs 500. The number of people working at the new site is expected to rise over time.

Mayor Christopher Cabaldon thanked the Memphis-based company for its commitment to West Sacramento.

"I want to congratulate FedEx Freight for the work you are doing," Cabaldon said.

Much of the recent news about West Sacramento has focused on the city's brisk-selling residential developments and the city's effort to transform the industrial riverfront area around Raley Field into a vibrant commercial and residential neighborhood.

To make that happen, the city is working to reroute a rail spur and move a cement plant.

Cabaldon said it's not about pushing industry out of town, but rather about putting developments where they're best suited and creating a better economic mix.

"We think economic diversity is key to us," Cabaldon said.
