Hughes Provides HX System for Satellite-Based Cellular Backhaul Services in Southeast Asia

Posted on: Tuesday, 22 September 2009, 06:00 CDT

GERMANTOWN, Md., Sept. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Hughes Network Systems, LLC (HUGHES), the global leader in broadband satellite network solutions and services, today announced that it has shipped more than 1,000 Hughes HX terminals to support backhaul connectivity for rural GSM picocells of a major Southeast Asia cellular operator. The network supports 3G wireless data and voice services in rural villages without access to cost-effective landline communications. In addition, HX terminals are being installed on maritime vessels to enable GSM cellular services aboard large, long-distance passenger ferry ships.

The combination of broadband satellite backhaul with GSM picocells provides a very low-cost solution to support cellular services in rural areas, and in this case includes reliable backhaul connectivity into the capital city. Deployment was assisted by government-funded Universal Service Obligation funds designated to enable communications in remote areas of the country.

"For people who live in these rural areas, this will be the first time that they will have cellular services in their community," said Ramesh Ramaswamy, assistant vice president, International, at Hughes. "Hughes is deeply committed to providing solutions that meet the challenge of providing cost-effective communications services in rural and remote areas of the world."

Hughes was selected based on the long-standing relationship and excellent reputation in the region. More than 200 HX satellite terminals have already been installed with completion expected by late 2009.
