Livedoor to Apply for 2GHz Spectrum for High-Speed Data Service

Jul. 15--TOKYO -- Livedoor Co. has decided to apply for the upcoming spectrum allocation in the 2-gigahertz band in a bid to offer nationwide high-speed wireless data service, the company said Friday.
The Internet portal operator's decision will intensify the competition for the allocation as the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry plans to grant the spectrum to only one new entrant by the end of this year.
IPMobile Inc., a Tokyo-based cellular phone service venture, and some other companies have already indicated they will apply.
Livedoor said it would utilize Kyocera Corp.'s iBurst technology in the 2GHz band to provide public-use, wireless local area network service.
Last month, the company announced a plan to launch an inexpensive wireless LAN service for high-speed Internet connections via laptop computers.
That service will be initially offered in selected locations in Tokyo from late July at a fixed fee of 525 yen per month, but it will be expanded nationwide in the future in the hope of winning 1 million users, Livedoor said.
Livedoor said it will launch the nationwide service in 2006 if it gets the license from the ministry.
The communications ministry also plans to allocate a 1.7-gigahertz band spectrum to two companies, preferably new entrants. Internet investor Softbank Corp. and eAccess Ltd., a broadband access provider, have said they would apply for the spectrum and look certain to be selected.
