CUPERTINO, Calif., Sept. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Trend Micro Inc. announced today that the University of Windsor, in Windsor Ontario, Canada relies on Trend Micro(TM) Enterprise Security, a tightly integrated offering of content security products and services powered by the Trend Micro(TM) Smart Protection Network(TM), to protect more than 3,000 PCs and servers across its campus.
"We saw that viruses and other Web-based malware were on the rise," said Kelvin Hwang, computing consultant for the University of Windsor. "This was impacting IT, since we had to handle calls from users and spend time cleaning up infected machines. We have a small staff and needed to get this under control. More importantly, infections were spreading before we could get to them and the Web threats were starting to impact users throughout the campus. We identified Web reputation technology in Trend Micro(TM) OfficeScan(TM) as a solution to our growing Web-threat problem without extra hardware and software."
Like many universities, the campus community is very protective of the open nature of its infrastructure but also the IT group at the University of Windsor recognizes the need for best-in-class security solutions to protect students, staff, and digital assets. The University of Windsor deploys Trend Micro(TM) OfficeScan(TM) Client/Server Edition and Trend Micro(TM) Internet Security Pro for laptops and off-campus PCs, Trend Micro(TM) ScanMail(TM) Suite for Lotus(TM) Domino(TM) for campus email server protection, Trend Micro(TM) ServerProtect(TM) for Microsoft(TM) Windows(TM)/Novell(TM) NetWare(TM) for file server protection, and Trend Micro(TM) Control Manager(TM) for administration. All Trend Micro Enterprise Security products are developed with the same value proposition in mind - to deliver immediate protection with less complexity.
"Trend Micro OfficeScan has helped us to stop Web threats earlier," said Hwang. "In particular, its Trend Micro(TM) Smart Protection Network(TM) Web reputation technology blocks many threats before they can impact our network and systems. When this feature was turned on, we saw a major drop in calls related to Web threats to the help desk. The resulting IT savings are very important since we have a small staff focused on security, and we must also manage other technology solutions and projects."
IT at the University of Windsor carried out a thorough assessment of OfficeScan and was able to quantify the effectiveness of the OfficeScan web reputation feature. "During our one-month campus-wide test, there were more than 15,000 URLs blocked by the web reputation technology in Trend Micro OfficeScan," said Hwang. "This resulted in a 41 percent reduction in the number of infected machines, and an 81 percent reduction in the number of detected malware. There was only one request to unblock one particular URL--making the results extremely compelling in favor of campus-wide deployment of Trend Micro's web reputation technology."
Trend Micro Enterprise Security products are powered by the Smart Protection Network, an innovative cloud-client architecture to help enterprises fight the explosion of malicious threats. To shorten the time to protection and reduce the complexity of on-site solutions, a client queries Web, email, and file reputation databases that are correlated in the cloud. Threats are stopped in real time at their source--before they impact local networks and systems.
