Cleveland Area Chancellor University Students Awarded the Garrett A. Morgan Scholarship, Receiving $5K Each

CLEVELAND, Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Sandra Morgan, Chancellor University Trustee, has awarded two $5,000 scholarships to marketing students, Craig Harvieux, 46, and Elizabeth A. Disanto, 44.

The scholarship is named after Ms. Morgan's grandfather, Garrett Augustus Morgan, Sr., born in 1877, who was an American inventor and innovator in the early to mid-1900s. Mr. Morgan invented and patented a traffic signal system that is the basis for current traffic lights (www.fhwa.dot.gov/gama/gamlife.htm). He died in 1963.

The Garrett A. Morgan Scholarship at Chancellor University seeks to honor the engineering, entrepreneurship, and intellectual curiosity exhibited by Mr. Morgan. It is awarded to Chancellor University students who live, work, and study within the spirit of Ms. Morgan's grandfather's life and contributions.

The recipients of this year's scholarships were selected by a search committee and were required to prepare an essay as well as complete personal interviews. To be considered, students must have a GPA of 3.25 or higher, be distinguished in the community, and exhibit an entrepreneurial spirit.

"We were very impressed by the character, intelligence, and positive attitudes exhibited by all of the candidates," said Dr. Lee Smith, Dean of the College of Business at Chancellor University, who headed the search committee.

Elizabeth A. Disanto, 44, is a single mother of two girls, and a sales assistant/inside sales representative at the Lubrizol Corporation where she has worked for over 20 years. She resides in Painesville, Ohio, and is one of eight "vibrant, lively Irish/Sicilian children." She states, "An amazing thing happened to me in 2004: I re-committed myself to actually finishing a business degree. My girlfriend, a working mother, convinced me that I should let nothing get in the way of completing my degree. Many of my fellow employees (most working mothers) were attending Chancellor University (then called Myers). So, with their positive reviews, I signed up and have since been forging my way as best I can." Ms. Disanto anticipates completing her degree in late 2011 or early 2012.

Craig Harvieux, 46, lives in Bay Village, Ohio. A native of Toronto, Ontario, he has over 20 years of marketing communications experience in industrial distribution. Mr. Harvieux chose Chancellor University on the recommendation of a friend. He is currently starting up his own marketing communications business, and states, "The benefit of receiving this scholarship is immeasurable because finishing my degree is a priority. The Garrett A. Morgan Scholarship now allows me to continue forward to achieve both my entrepreneurial and educational goals."

The benefactor, Sandra Morgan, recently joined the Chancellor University Board of Trustees, and has held several positions in the non-profit world, including the Director of Institutional Relations at the National Inventors Hall of Fame, Akron, Ohio. A native Clevelander, she serves as Honorary Consul of the United Kingdom for Ohio, and she is a member of the British American Chamber of Commerce, Vice Chairman of the Cleveland Metropolitan Bond Accountability Commission, the British Marshalls Selection Committee, among other organizations.
