"The southwest's amenity-filled cities with close proximity to incredible natural beauty continue to hold enormous appeal to travelers," said Steve Dumaine, senior director of merchandising for hotels.com®. "While many cities in the region haven't seen prices decline as steeply as the national average, there are great values to be found with hotels in the area."
Three cities in Texas remained in the top 20 list of favorite destinations for U.S. travelers with San Antonio rounding out the top ten, and Houston placing thirteenth and Dallas sixteenth. San Antonio and Houston also continued to be favorite destinations with international travelers, ranking eighteenth and nineteenth respectively.
Some of the notable findings about destinations in the southwest region in the latest HPI report include:
-- Arizona matched the national average of a 17 percent price decrease in the average hotel price for the first six months of 2009 compared to the same period in 2008, while Texas and New Mexico only dropped 9 percent and 8 percent respectively.
-- Most cities in Texas bucked the national trend with prices in Dallas/Ft. Worth dipping only 1 percent to an average of $122 per night with prices in Houston dropping 6 percent to an average of $116 per night and Austin seeing a decrease of 7 percent to $120 per night compared to the same period in 2008. San Antonio experienced the largest price drop with a 14 percent dip to $120 per night.
-- Hotel prices in Arizona saw double-digit drops that slightly surpassed the national average with Tucson seeing a decrease of prices of 19 percent, averaging $100 per night, and Phoenix experiencing an 18 percent drop to an average of $104 per night.
