Livedoor to File for Radio Frequencies for Mobile Service

Posted on: Friday, 15 July 2005, 18:00 CDT

Tokyo, July 15 (Jiji Press)--Internet business company livedoor Co. plans to apply for radio frequencies with the Japanese government for its plan to start a high-speed wireless data communications service in 2006, it was learned Friday.

In its application to be submitted to the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry, livedoor will seek to use part of the 2 gigahertz band for the service, informed sources said.

The ministry is set to allocate part of the 2 GHz and 1.7 GHz bands to new entrants to the wireless communications market. The ministry is expected to pick one newcomer for the 2 GHz band and one or two companies for the 1.7 GHz band, with a decision seen to be made by the end of this year.

For the envisioned high-speed data communications service, livedoor plans to use a technology format, called iBurst, now being developed by Kyocera Corp. , the sources said.

Livedoor is aiming to establish a high-speed wireless communications network across the nation by combining the iBurst- based service and a wireless local area network-based communications service it plans to launch late this month, they said.

The iBurst technology allows longer-distance, more stable data communications compared with the LAN technology.

In addition to livedoor, IPMobile Inc., a Tokyo-based mobile phone venture company, is seeking a business license to launch its service using frequencies in the 2 GHz band.END
